In the process of tractor towing aircraft, urgent braking caused by operating environments, emergencies or human factors may lead to heavy traction load. Serious accidents will happen if traction load is larger than the withstand load of the aircraft and its components can withstand. Therefore, we propose a towbar with variable buffering characteristics. Taking Y-12 aircraft as the reference model, a multibody system model including “tractor-towbar-aircraft” has been established based on ADAMS. In order to get relevant parameters of the towbar with variable buffering characteristics, joint simulations have been done based on ADAMS-SIMULINK. Aiming at verifying the values of practical applications of the towbar, traction experiments have been designed and executed. The main work includes the following aspects:(1) Taking Y-12 aircraft as the reference model, a towed system model including contact-impact force has been established based on ADAMS. The towed system model consists of a tractor, a towbar, an aircraft, 7 tires and a road model.(2) The values of the traction load are designed and limited according to the design specifications of the towbar. The structural parameters of the hydraulic cylinder are determined by its design principles. The relevant parameters of the buffer have been obtained based on joint simulations of ADAMS and SIMULINK. On the basis of the previous work, the towbar with variable buffering characteristics has been manufactured.(3) Traction experiments have been done to compare and analyze the effects of different joint gaps on the peak of traction load and different orifice diameters on the buffer performance of the towbar, and to evaluate the practical feasibility of the towbar with variable buffering characteristics.The experiments have showed that the towbar with variable buffering characteristics can provide security assurance for the aircraft ground traction.
