In order to meet the challenges of global climate change and ecological environment deterioration, the world is paying more attention to energy conservation. The importance of building energy consumption to energy conservation has attracted broad attention. As the residential building is the main part of architecture industry, the development of low energy consumption of residential building is the inevitable trend of energy conservation and the key link to achieve sustainable development.Current low energy residential design and control practices are more emphasis on energy consumption, while lack of attention to indoor air quality (IAQ). In order to achieve the energy saving binding target, residential building generally improve the air tightness, enhance the performance of the retaining structure and reduce the amount of ventilation. However, the reduction of the amount of ventilation in low energy consumption residence may cause IAQ problems and adverse health effects. Meanwhile, the demands of building energy consumption in hot-summer and cold-winter (HSCW) region in China is large, and people are pursuing better indoor air environment as the economy is rapidly developing. But better indoor air environment generally means more energy consumption. This is a great challenge for the building construction industry. Therefore, study the IAQ of low energy consumption is of great significance to create a healthy, comfortable and energy saving environment. This paper tested the air change rate and IAQ of residential building in Nanjing by sampling. Through the comparison of energy saving and ordinary residential building, the measured results showed that under the case of doors and windows closed and no mechanical ventilation, the amount of air ventilation in residential buildings is small, which is more likely to cause IAQ problems than that of ordinary residences. On this basis, the balance concentration of formaldehyde and carbon dioxide under different air change rate in the residential building were simulated through numerical simulation method. The minimum air change rate to meet the IAQ standards was obtained in this study. Building energy consumption were also simulated under different air change rate parameters, including the obtained one and the recommended values derived from multiple energy saving standards. The results provided a basis of energy saving effect for the selection of different residential IAQ design strategy. In order to help architects and engineers to consider the IAQ better in the design stage, this paper summarized the energy saving and high IAQ performance design strategies of low energy consumption residence and analyzed their characteristic, especially on energy saving effect. Finally, as the outdoor air pollution in Nanjing was serious in recent years, the impact of outdoor air pollution on energy saving effect of natural ventilation in HSCW region residence was evaluated.
