Buddhist Temple garden occupies the largest part in the living cases of Chinese classical gardens. This paper intends to shed new light on the construction rules of Chinese classical gardens by the quantitative analysis on the role that plant landscape plays in temple garden space. The records of the garden space organization of Buddhist temple can be traced back to Ming and Qing dynasties, but most of them are the depiction of space and artistic conception, results of which are affected by the subjective judgments of the researchers. This paper chose the eight temples in Hangzhou to carry out a survey of the plant information in the temple, including its species, breast diameter and coverage, and measured the temple area and the area of the temple green space. This paper studies the effects of plant landscape on the Buddhist temple garden space by space syntax in terms of quantitative analysis,in order to providing novel ideas for the landscape design of the Buddhist temple gardens and broadening the application of spatial digital analysis in the field of garden. This study focuses on horizontal comparison of samples of different temples, and constructs three scenarios(walkable layer, visible layer and control layer),using Visibility Graph Analysis from two perspectives to analyze the Buddhist temple garden plants in space.Relevant conclusions are achieved. It is hoped to provide both theory and application basis for the plant landscape design and garden management of the temple environment. The results demonstrates that the space and plant landscape of the temple in Hangzhou complies with the following laws:Firstly,in the whole space, the plant landscape mainly affects the space walkable layer. The larger the temple area, the stronger the limit effect to the walkable layer.Secondly, the greening rate of the temple is closely related to the integration value of the walkable layer in the whole space. It has no obvious influence on the integration value of the temple's visible layer. However,in the Local space, the influence of the greening rate to the visible layer is stronger than the walkable layer.Thirdly,In traditional temples, the number of species of plants planted in temples was related to the temple area;the landscape of temple more of chose evergreen species with ornamental features;Hangzhou temple configuration was the most commonly used landscape species with Osmanthus fragrans,Cinnamomum camphora,Aesculus chinensis Bunge, but also the largest number of planted;the number of autumn seasonal plants in temples is positively correlated with the temple greening rate.Fourthly, the main space harbors the highest spatial connectivity, while the temple at the end of the space and living space the lowest. It conforms to the service function of space and position attributes of space on temple axis.
