In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology, the economy ismore and more globalized and internationalized. Meanwhile, international culturalexchanges are on an increase at all levels. These factors make it possible for thetourism industry to develop at an unprecedented rate. Tourism is the third industry(tertiary sector), known as the contemporary "smokeless industry"(smokelessindustry), but, above all, it is a "cultural industry"(cultural enterprise). Guideinterpretation is a typical cross-cultural communication activity. With more and moreforeign tourists coming to China, the role of a guide interpreter as a culturalmessenger cannot be ignored. In this report, based on the guide interpreting conducted by the interpreter forAlison Sutherland, wife of Fraser Sutherland who is an expert in the Center forLexicography in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, the interpreter aims atassessing a pragmatic and effective performance, and making pertinent suggestionsfor other interpreters. This interpreting job lasted one day. The report is based on theinterpreting experience on our visit to the Chen Clan Academy. In the report, theinterpreter gives a brief description of the interpretation task, interpretation process, and explores the performance of on-site guide interpretation by case analysis and bycomparing the Chinese guided audio text with the interpreter's transcript. Finally, theinterpreter concludes that three kinds of typical mistakes lie in the interpreter's work, namely, a failure in background information, information delivery failure, and simplerepetition and irrelevant information. As for these three mistakes, the interpreter putsforward the corresponding countermeasures. The interpreter hopes that this report willprovide a reference for other guide interpreters to better accomplish their tasks, aswell as to promote smooth cultural communication. |
