Report On Translation Of The 27^th Chapter Of Constitutionalism Of The U.S.:25 Influential Cases

Under globalization and China's opening up and reform, the country is attaching more importance to outbound exchange, involving not only economy, politics and military, but culture, science and other fields. In regard to science, interaction across the border has always been the country's major concern, with a hope to speed up the development of domestic philosophy and social science. Sectors of society have responded enthusiastically by holding various academic forums and seminars. On that account, there is a greater need than before for the translation of domestic research findings in Chinese into English, part of which can be traced to overseas students. Despite the fact that China's authoritative translation institutions which is equipped with rich human resources has systematically translated foreign academic works into Chinese or the other way around, there remains a want of research on the translation of social science texts into foreign languages. Moreover, for this kind of text, the quality of translations received by individual client remains at a relatively low level on the whole. This paper, in form of report and with material of a social science text, discusses how to decide on translation strategy and solve the problems posed by the translation of a text of this sort. For the strategy, the author guided by Hans Vermeer's Skopos theory pins down on a combination of semantic translation and communicative translation based on Peter Newmark's theory and text analysis. Guided by the communicative strategy, the author provides solutions for such problems as the translation of four-character structure and culture-loaded language and dealing of conditional sentences and long sentences. In addition, the paper also explores, particularly for a social science text, how to convey the writer's opinions in light of the semantic strategy. So far, report on translation of social science text into English remains a want; therefore, with this paper, the author hopes to provoke thinking and provide possible solutions.
