This paper, based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model of Simultaneous Interpretation, discusses the effect of Simplification on enhancing interpretation performance. The Effort Model holds that in simultaneous interpretation(SI),listening and analysis,short-term memory, speech production and coordination all consume interpreters' efforts. If the total processing capacity required(TR)for a task is greater than the total available processing capacity(TA),interpretation performance will be compromised. While multitasking, interpreters can use Simplification to decrease TR,and effectively coordinate the above mentioned tasks to improve interpretation performance. The author takes a Chinese to English SI class on the 2010 International Conference on the Protection of the Ozone Layer as an example to explain the significance of Simplification in enhancing interpretation performance in SI and its application in before-interpretation preparation of SI with text. Before class conference-related materials, including:the agenda(in both Chinese and English),opening words by the moderator(in Chinese),the keynote speech(in Chinese, check against delivery)were provided. This paper holds that Simplification through decreasing TR can efficiently allocate efforts, increase interpretation performance and quality. Therefore,Simplification is essential in achieving better interpretation performance.
