A Translation Report On Climate Intervention:Reflecting Sunlight To Cool Earth (P1-P38)

Since the industrial revolution, with the increasing progress of science and technology as well as the rapid development of economy, people have, on the one hand, enjoyed the achievements of technological progress, and on the other hand, have to face its serious damages and challenges, one of which is global warming. Global warming is mainly due to the excessive combustion of coal, oil and natural gas in the modern industrial society, and as a result, a large amount of carbon dioxide finds its way into the atmosphere. As the largest developing country all over the word, China is developing rapidly, in terms of its economy, the harm of global warming to our country is growing, too. As the climate intervention work started relatively late in our country, therefore, there are still many difficulties in the technical aspects of environmental protection. Some developed countries, such as the United States of America, have advanced technologies in mitigating global warming, and they have achieved some results. Therefore, it is urgent for us to learn advanced technologies from other countries, and upon this, we should actively develop practical technology in line with China’s national conditions.The book Climate Intervention:Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth published by National Academies Press in May of 2015, gives an introduction to the technologies on carbon dioxide emissions of international community, especially albedo modification technology. The translator has translated the Summary, Chapter One and Chapter Two of the book. The translation project report is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the translation project, including its background, translation theory, purpose and significance. The second chapter is an introduction to the source text, including its main content, linguistic features, syntactic features and preparation work before the translation. The third chapter deals with the difficult points in the course of translating, such as terminology, acronyms and long sentences. With the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translator has solved the translation difficulties with such translation techniques as literal translation, liberal translation, addition, omission, division and combination. The last chapter is the conclusion of enlightenment, experience and problems to be solved from this translation practice.Through the translation practice, firstly, the translator has acquired a general knowledge about the current situation and future orientation of environmental protection. Secondly, the translator has a better understanding of stylistic features for environmental protection text and its translation skills so as to lay a solid foundation for her future career on technical translation. Thirdly, it is hoped that the translation practice can not only help improve her translation ability and expand her knowledge sphere, but also provide useful reference for China to reduce climate damages.
