This translation project report is based on the first two chapters of the book The Man Who Wasn't There: Investigations into the Strange New Science of the Self, published in August, 2015 by Penguin Publishing Group. The author A nil Ananthaswamy presents the read ers a collectio n of com prehensive interviews with doctors and mental patients, bringing together in this book cutting-edge neuroscience and philosophy from the West and the East.This translation project is com posed of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background, the significance, and the structur e of this transla tion project report. Chapter 2 covers details about the source text, including introduction of the author, publishing facts, main content, and stylistic analysis of the source text. Chapter 3 sets forth the process of translating the source text, including the pr eparation work done before translating, and the th eoretical basis, which are Peter Newmark's proposal of three functions of language and tw o translation methods. Chapter 4 m akes clear the difficulty of this translation report and the solutions to it. The difficulty is philosophical texts in the source text. The translator tackles the problem by deciding the philosophical texts being of the expressive function of language, one of the three funcitons of language. Then, the translator adopts the method of semantic translation that is in Peter Newmark's opinion the best way to translat e texts of the expressive function of language. At last, the translator uses tactics like amplification, transfer of verb moods and the subjects, to translate the philosophical source text. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this translation project report, which su mmarizes lessons learned for the trans lator and the problem to be solved of this report.This translation project report shows, it is recommended, when encountering a difficulty of translating philo sophical texts, to adopt Pe ter Newmark's main ideas of translation to ascertain the expressive function of a philosophical language, and accordingly use the method of semantic translation to translate it.
