This is a report on the translation of the fourth chapter of Research for the Advancement of Green Chemistry Practice: Studies in Atmospheric and Educational Chemistry. The research is a PhD dissertation by Steven Gene Cullipher of University of Massachusetts. The source text of the project is the last chapter with the title: Use of Eye Tracking to Understand Student's Interpretations of Structure-property Relationships in the Context of Global Warming, in which the author adopts eye tracking method to research students' understanding of structure-property relationships of chemical substances. As similar researches are rare in China, the translator regards it as significant to have the source text translated into Chinese. This report can offer useful references to chemistry course education at the college level in China. This report consists of four parts. The first is a general introduction to the whole translation project, including the background, purpose and significances. The second part introduces the source text of the translation project, including the content, structure and the stylistic features. The third part is a review on the translating process, which starts with an introduction to the translation theories adopted by the author to guide her practice, and then proceeds to account the problems encountered by the translator and the solutions. The fourth part is the conclusion of the paper.Under the guidance of text typology theory and adaptation and selection theory, the translator endeavors to solve the typical difficulties and problems such as thetranslation of jargons and terminologies, passive voices as well as logical meaning in science and technology text, so as to offer references to translators of the same area.
