With the acceleration of economic development and cultural exchanges, there have been a growing number of TCKs (Third culture kids) in the modern society, which has aroused people's great concern. TCKs refer to children who spend a significant period of their developmental years in a culture outside their parents' passport culture. To some extent, most of TCKs are playing an important role in the international cultural exchanges and the change of world pattern for their cross-cultural competence and expanded worldview. Just as sociologist Ted Ward once claimed, "TCKs were the prototype citizens of the future." As more and more Chinese people, particularly kids, have been sent abroad owing to the educational plan or parents' careers, a lot of overseas Chinese have begun to emerge in the globalizing world among which most of them have ever had the TCK experience. Therefore, it has become increasingly important for Chinese TCKs to know more about themselves and be known by others. At present, there have been plenty of related studies about TCKs in the countries like America and Japan. In China, there are only a few books introducing TCKs or ATCK and the Chinese parallel text about it is in desperately short supply, which, of course, cannot fully reflect the TCKs' lives in depth. As the book Third Culture Kids:Growing up Among Worlds (Revised Edition) has manifested TCKs in a comprehensive way, it is necessary for the translator to translate this book into Chinese.This thesis mainly consists of two parts. The first part is the translation practice in which about 15,000 English words are required to be translated. The source text (Chapters 6-9) is selected from the book Third Culture Kids:Growing up Among Worlds (Revised Edition) which is written by David C. Pollock and Ruth E.Van Reken. The translation practice will make it easier for Chinese readers to learn about TCKs and their influence on the world, and further provide references to the related studies on TCKs.The second part is a translation report which is based on the translation practice. The report mainly consists of four chapters. The first chapter centers on the introduction of the translation project from the following aspects:background, theoretical foundation, purpose and significance. Chapter two makes a brief introduction to the author, content and the linguistic features of the source text. Chapter three makes a summary of the difficulties and methods in translating by means of case studies. Guided by Nida's functional equivalence, the translator mainly adopts the free translation and some specific translation methods have also been applied into practice such as conversion, negation, amplification, division and recasting. Chapter four mainly summarizes the acquired experience and lessons and the problems.In a word, the translation practice enables the translator to gain a better understanding of the translation activity and enrich translating experience. Besides, the translation version will help the Chinese readers learn more about TCKs group and provide new insight or references to the related studies on TCKs.
