The translation practice report is based on the translation of chapter 1 of Our Kids, which is a sociology monograph questioning the American dream, written by American political scholar Robert D.Putnam in 2015.The author exposes that American dream proposed in 1776 is not true now,at least not true compared with previous days.Through the comparison between the children that graduated from Ohio Clinton port middle school in 1958 and their next generations,it can be seen that social environment, encouraging students to strive for ideal of life, which was put forward based on American dream, hasn't existed any longer.Family background, school education and social statues play an increasingly important role in the way of one's success. The translator masters the features of source language and target language and selects Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as the guidance. The report analyses the translation cases from three aspects: semantic equivalence, stylistic equivalence and cultural equivalence according to the theory. Some translation skills, such as amplification, omission, division and conversion, are applied, which not only make target language closest and most natural to source language but also make target readers acquire the same response as source readers. At last,it records some difficulties and problems in the translation process, summarizes translating experience and puts forward some suggestions to the translation of sociological monographs.
