Third culture is a unique culture which is formed when people assimilate the home culture and the host culture in a highly mobile multi-cultural environment. Kids growing up in the third culture are called TCKs (third culture kids), who face particular opportunities and challenges in their developmental years, so that they are the group of people who need special attention to some extent. Now many studies about TCKs have been made in western countries, which are helpful to third culture kids and their family in coping with opportunities and challenges. With the development of globalization, the communication between China and other countries becomes more frequent, which results in the increase of Chinese TCKs. However, there are few studies on TCKs in China, and relevant Chinese versions are in short supply. Therefore, the translation of relevant English texts about TCKs becomes particularly urgent.The thesis mainly consists of two parts. The first part is a translation practice with about 16000 words. The source text is chosen from Third Culture Kids:Growing up Among Worlds, including Chapter 13 to Chapter 15.The authors, David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken who have been working on TCKs for many years, have made a full explanation of TCKs and provided abundant practical suggestions in the book. The translation practice aims to let Chinese readers know more about TCKs and provide guidance for Chinese TCKs. Meanwhile, it is aimed at offering a reference for the translation of the parallel texts.The second part is a translation report on the translation practice, made up of four chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the background, theoretical foundation, purpose and significance of the translation project. Chapter two is a brief introduction of the author, the content and linguistic features of the source text. Chapter three plays an important role in the translation report, manifesting difficulties in the translation and summarizing specific translation methods. In the translation practice, the translator mainly applies literal translation under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence, and addition, omission, division and other translation methods are adopted. Chapter four is the conclusion of the experience and lessons acquired and problems to be solved in the translation practice.Through the translation practice, on one hand, the translator has known more about TCKs and accumulated the relevant translation experience, deepening the understanding of Nida's functional equivalence. On the other hand, readers can know more about TCKs from the translation practice. Meanwhile, the translation practice can also provide a reference for domestic studies on TCKs.
