Computer-aided translation or CAT is a form of language translation in which a human translator uses computer software to support and facilitate the translation process. Its development originates from the advent of computer. Since the 21 st century, the age of electronic informatization and internet, CAT has been developed unprecedentedly and used widely, becoming an essential skill of a modern translator.Meanwhile, it has been, because of a large amount of machine translation, pointed out and criticized that there are many problems such as blunt translation, mistranslation and leaking translation. The core part of this thesis consists of four parts. The first one mainly describes the overall situation of CAT electronic tools such as its development and prospect. In the second part, it emphatically introduces several CAT tools commonly used at home from the range of electronic dictionary, automatic translation, and search engine. Then,it analyzes the application of these tools in looking up words, translation of terminologies, searching of background information and automatic translation. The final part points out the limitations of current CAT and explores the method of effectively improving the efficiency and quality of CAT in terms of three aspects that are translation tools themselves, translation process, and translators.Through the four parts, author hopes it can help translators enhance their understanding of CAT and better serve their translation work with current conditions.
