As a wide-ranging social phenomenon, popular science spreads easy and understandable scientific knowledge to general mass by means of various medium, including social science, natural science as well as science and technology. The author translates Are You Adopting Low Carbon Lifestyle from Chinese into English and makes a practice report on the translation. The content of the book is moderate and suitable for common readers. It supports the thesis in studying popular science translation to an extreme.Under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, the thesis studies how to translate popular science article on lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, combining with four standards of the theory: 1) conveyance of information; 2) conveyance of spirit and style in original work; 3) smooth language meets target language's grammar and expression; 4) similarity in reader's response. The thesis makes a study on the translation of popular science article concentrating on the following questions:1) How to achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on lexical level?2) How to achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on syntactic level?3) How to achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on textual level?Focusing on the four standards of Nida's functional equivalence theory, together with concrete translation approaches and conversions between Chinese and English, the thesis gives answers to the three questions raised above:1) To achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on lexical level, the author converts dynamic Chinese into static English, such as substitute noun for verb, substitute preposition for verb. The author also adopts translation according to cultural context and proper translation of Chinese four-character phrase;2) To achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on syntactic level, the author converts active structure of Chinese into passive structure of English and uses inanimate-subject sentence of English;3) To achieve Nida's functional equivalence theory on textual level, the author adopts appropriate devices in textual cohesion, including hypotaxis and parataxis, repetition and substitution. Besides, the author converts loose structure of Chinese into compact structure of English. As popular science is an important and specialized field, its translation should be taken seriously. Before translation, the whole book is read carefully by the author for a thorough understanding of the content and features of the original text. During the translation process, proper conversions are adopted. In the meantime, the author analyzes all words and sentences carefully to achieve equivalence between original text and target text to an extreme. The thesis, which introduces the features, difficulties and emphases of popular science translation,is designed to provide practical instructions. The thesis also puts forward the findings of the study, some problems to be solved and suggestions for future research. It's expected to make contributions to popular science translation.
