LIHECI is a separable verb in modern Chinese which is found as a problem in learning and teaching to non-native Chinese speakers and foreigners. Lao students, especially those students who live in a non-Chinese speaking environment, are commonly witnessed as incorrect users of the grammar when studying LIHECI. In order to help Lao students in learning Chinese LIHECI, this thesis will find out ways to improve the student to learn LIHECI better by:conducting a research via the selection of Lao students studying in the Department of Chinese Language at the Lao National University as sample group and as subject of this study;choosing main textbooks which are used as instructional materials in Chinese course; identifying how many LIHECI are used in the textbooks and how much LIHECI has been extended; and analytically comparing Lao and Chinese languages. Once these are complete, a set of questionnaire are developed and used in actual survey in order to collect information related to the misuse of LIHECI by Lao students, including information on types of errors of LIHECI, reasons and causes of such mistakes. The thesis main objective is to improve the Chinese learning of the Lao students as well as to enhance the instructional techniques of the Chinese language.The thesis is divided into five main chapters as follows:The Introduction Section explains the reasons for choosing the thesis topic, research direction and methodology, expected outcomes of the research, and summarizes literature reviews on various documents related to LIHECI.Chapter One describes the data collection from the student textbooks and teachers' instructional materials that contain LIHECI Words and the separable words of the of the Chinese Language Department at the National University of Laos and summarizes all sample LIHECI words which are then screened and put into separate categories.Chapter Two covers the comparison between the LIHECI words and phrases which are drawn from the textbooks and the Lao language in which shows that there are some similarities in verb and phase, but differences in the extendedforms in Lao language.Chapter Three explains the uses of created questionnaire to collect information on the conditions on how students learn LIHECI clutch words while the Chapter also incorporates data collected from the questionnaire to make further analysis. The results from the close scrutiny show that Lao students poorly master the extended form of the LIHECI with substantial error made by students in early years of university. However, the rate of deviation for the mistakes made by students declines as they embark into higher year of academy.Chapter Four further categorizes types of errors mastered by the students based on the analysis given in the previous chapter. It further presents the reasons and causes for each corresponding error type.The last chapter(Chapter 5) provides suggestions to students how they should improve their learning skills of LIHECI by referring to reasons and causes of making mistakes in the extended words of LIHECI. This chapter eventually furnishes recommendations on the amelioration of instructionalmaterials, learning and teaching techniques for students and teachers.
