The Interpretive Theory was put forward by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer of ESIT in the 1960 s. According to the Interpretive Theory, The study of the theory no longer remains in the mere language level, but to focus on the semantic transmission. Interpreting consists of three stages: comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression. Among them,“deverbalization” is the core of the Interpretive Theory. The core idea of the Interpretive Theory lies in that interpreting is explaining the meaning, which is not simply a mechanical exchange of linguistic symbols, but a dynamic process of understanding the meaning and re-expressing. The Interpretive Theory also has a unique understanding for interpreting principle, holding that interpretation process should abide by the principle of faithfulness.China has gained an increasingly great international status and significant influence all over the word. Under this background, the press conference during NPC and CPPCC is attracting worldwide attention. The information released is comprehensive, official and accurate for wider listeners and the language used is rather formal. Premier Wen Jiabao often quoted the expressions with Chinese characteristics, such as Chinese idioms, poems, and four-character structures during the NPC and CPPCC. Such expressions are always the difficulties in interpretation. For this reason, it is necessary for interpreters to choose proper interpreting strategies. This paper studies the interpretation of Premier Wen Jiabao's press conference from 2003 to 2012. On the foundation of the Interpretive Theory, this paper analyzes the principle of faithfulness embodied in press conference interpreting and some interpreting strategies adopted by the interpreter combined with case analysis. The study found that with the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, the interpreter should follow three interpreting stages: comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression. During this process, the principle of faithfulness is embodied in two aspects: faithful to the speaker's intentions and faithful to the target language. Strategies adopted include: sentence restructuring, explanation, addition and omission.Adhering to the principle of combining theory with practice, this paper discusses the embodiment of the principle of faithfulness in press conference interpreting and appropriate interpreting strategies, which has a certain reference value for the further research in this field.
