Study Of Strategies For Press Conference Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

The present thesis focuses on the ideal strategies employed in the press conference interpreting (PCI). Constructing the theoretical framework based on Interpretive Theory, the study adopts an exploratory and explanatory research method to analyze the ideal interpreting strategies in the data collected from the press conferences delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao during the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions from 2003 to 2007, hoping to provide some guidance for the interpreters in the interpreting practice.The research will begin with an introduction to Interpretive Theory and PCI. Next, based on Interpretive Theory, the thesis defines the factors affecting PCI and the requirements of PCI accordingly. Afterwards, the study summarizes the strategies adopted in PCI with the approach of Interpretive Theory by quoting the examples from the five press conference transcriptions of Premier Wen Jiabao during the NPC and CPPCC sessions from 2003 to 2007.Through the study, the following findings have been achieved. Firstly, in the light of Interpretive Theory, the factors affecting PCI include the identity, purpose, political standpoint and cultural background of the speaker, the identity and cultural background of the listener as well as the language knowledge and possession of cognitive complements of the interpreter. Secondly, according to the above factors, the requirements of PCI may consist of complete and accurate interpreting of sense, political information, cultural information, affective information and the style. Thirdly, in line with these requirements, the ideal strategies of PCI comprise information supplement, explanatory interpreting, free interpreting, logic-processing and sentence pattern transformation.As a conclusion, it might be a meaningful attempt to probe into the interpreting strategies employed in PCI from the perspective of Interpretive Theory. The strategies may serve as guidance for the interpreters in their interpreting practice in order to improve the interpreting effects.
