| Global interaction in basketball is increasing fast. The number of foreign players and coaches who are paid to play or coach for China's basketball teams is rising. Besides, a large number of basketball-related commercial activities have been appearing like mushrooms after rain. Under these circumstances, basketball interpreters are needed more than ever.This paper reports the interpreter's experience of the 2015 Sino-US Basketball All-Star Tour. The interpreter encountered some major problems like mental stress; the difficulties of understanding African American accents; and the conversion of terminologies used on the basketball court. The report then gives a list of solutions to each of those problems encountered. Firstly, anticipate the problems in preparation before interpretation, including the use of scenario simulation to ease the mental stress of the interpreter. Secondly, get acquainted with common accents on the basketball court by listening drills. Lastly, build a bank of basketball terminologies. It is believed that an interpreter's psychological quality is as important as his interpreting skills. |
