Asian American History and Cultures: An Encyclopedia, published by Sharpe Reference Incorporation in 2010, is an encyclopedia on the immigration of Asian Americans about its history and culture. Edited by Professor Huping Ling and Allan Austin, this book collects many Asian immigrant materials reflecting the most contemporary research and insights from professional journal articles, monographs,and doctoral dissertations. In September, 2016, the translated text will be published by World Book Publisher in China.This report gives a careful discussion of the translation practice under the guidance of translation strategies. It includes 4 parts: first, the task description,presenting an introduction of the source text and the editor, the requirements of the translation and the significance of this report; secondly, the process description of the translation, which contains the preparation of the translation, the difficulties met during the translation process and proofreading and revision of the translation; thirdly,the case studies. Chapter three illustrates how to apply translation strategies and techniques in dealing with the translation problems mainly from the perspectives of lexical, syntactic levels and contextual levels; fourthly, the conclusion of the report,which shows the findings and unsolved problems of the translation.In this report, translation strategies and techniques like class-shift, functional equivalence, following the original syntactic order, turning phrases into clauses, and reinventing sentence structures and semantic extension are discussed. The contextual translation problems are settled under the guidance of Resis, Katherina's and Peter Newmark's text typology, which views a sentence group as a unit in translation and provides adoptable advice on the expressive text.
