Listening skill is one of the preconditions for communication and plays a significant role in the second language teaching and learning. Exercises in the textbook are an essential approach to train listening skill. The researcher was an intern in the Center of Language and Culture in Sun Yat-sen University and studied a lot on Step by Step Chinese: Intermediate Listening, a textbook for intermediate users. In order to analyze the practicability of the exercises in the textbook and its influences on teaching and learning, the related data and theories are studied. It is found that there are some problems on the design of the question types and the degree of difficulty of the exercises in the textbook. Furthermore, the approaches of classroom observations, questionnaires and interview to both teachers and students are applied. The results indicate that learners desire to do well in the listening class and have a high expectation on teachers, while teachers need to take advantage of the exercises in the textbook to fit the learners? level. It is hoped that the study can provide some useful teaching suggestions to raise the efficiency of listening exercises by analyzing the textbook and the conclusion of the current study results. |
