The Critical Application Of Machine Translation In Translation Practice

In this increasingly globalized world, international exchanges in the field of economy, politics and culture have become closer. In order to remove language barriers in communication, translation has become a necessary bridge for international exchanges. As the translation market grows, it is impossible to solely rely on human translation, which has been unable to meet the surging translation demand for a long time. Thus, major translation companies and professional translators resort to machine translation(MT). With the improvement of MT technology, machine translation can help translators to increase translation speed and efficiency. However, machine translation is also criticized for its translation quality. Too much reliance on machine translation exerts negative influence on translation market. This paper aims to analyse the pros and cons of machine translation in translation practice, and generalize typical mistakes produced by machine translation. It is believed that post-editing can be helpful to make up for MTI deficiencies. Translators should critically take advantages of machine translation tools and integrate machine translation with post-editing for perfect translations, thus increasing translation speed, and at the same time ensuring translation quality.
