This paper mainly takes the students in the elementary Chinese classes of the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna as an example,and discusses how to develop and expand the cultural contents on the basis of the teaching materials so as to adapt to the learners' actual needs.During the teaching process at the Confucius Institute,the author found that the cultural contents in the textbook are scattered that difficult to adapt to the learners' actual needs.In order to expand the learners' cultural horizons and improve their communication skills,the author decided to add some supplementary and extensional contents to the textbooks appropriately.Taking the approach of combining the teaching design and case analysis together,choosing the theory of secondary development of teaching materials,culture teaching theory and teaching design theory as the theoretical basis,and drawing lessons from the cognitive-empirical approaches and humanistic-functional approaches during the process of teaching design,this paper selects the 26th unit from "The Road to Success(Lower Elementary2)" as a specific case,analyzes and discusses how to expand the teaching of culture based on the learners' actuality,hoping to provide a reference for the cultural extension teaching at Confucius Institutes in the future.This paper is divided into six parts:The first chapter summarizes the significance of this topic,elaborates the research ideas and methods,and reviews the relevant theories and the results of the research.The second chapter is the background investigation and analysis.This paper mainly analyzes the overall situation of the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna and the concrete situation of the author 's class.It also introduces the interview outline and questionnaire designed for the students in the class,and analyzes the students' actual needs through the feedback.The third chapter mainly analyzes the necessity and possibility of expanding the teaching of culture.At the same time,it expatiates the main idea that the author carries on the teaching design.The fourth chapter shows the design of cultural teaching.The author mainly enumerates the goals that the teaching is expected to achieve,expounds the methods used in the teaching and the theories that followed during the teaching process,and expounds the teaching process including the content of the text and the expansion of the culture teaching.The fifth chapter is the main part of this article,with pre-lesson preparation,case display and case analysis as the clue,which shows four cases of cultural teaching expansion:vocabulary teaching,topic teaching,classroom activities and extracurricular practice.The sixth chapter is the reflection and the summary of this teaching process.Through the analysis of the interview and the result of the questionnaire survey,The author wants to obtain the experience of this teaching activity,summarize the insufficiency and provide the reference for the later teaching.
