With the rise of China as an economic powerhouse in the world stage along with the dissemination of Chinese culture around the world,the Chinese language has attracted considerable attention among language learners throughout the globe,including African countries like Tanzania.Teaching Chinese as a career option has also been on the rise.The most directly observable form of Chinese language teaching is in-class teaching,especially the Elementary Chinese comprehensive course,which is the most essential part of Chinese language courses.Yet,there has been very less research made on Chinese language comprehensive courses of Tanzania.Therefore,the author has carried out a research on the Elementary Chinese comprehensive courses of the Confucius Institute of Dodoma University,Tanzania.This thesis integrates both the in-class language instruction theories and the practical teaching experience of the author at the Confucius Institute of Dodoma University in Tanzania.The research was carried out by conducting two questionnaire surveys for the purpose of data collection,which were distributed to 8 Chinese teachers and 42 students,all from the Elementary Chinese comprehensive course batches.The survey was used to study the situation of the teachers and the students in the context of in-class Chinese language pedagogy,and the analysis began through research on the data thus collected.The first chapter of this thesis is the introductory part which puts forth the reasons for the selection of this topic and makes a review of the previous researches on the topic.It also talks about the significance of this research,the research methodology,theories consulted and the sources of the corpora.The actual body of this thesis consists of four parts.The second chapter "The current circumstance of Chinese Language teaching in the Confucius Institute of Dodoma University" elaborates on the history of development of the Confucius Institute in Dodoma University and explains its course types in brief.The third chapter analyses the efficiency of the teachers' teaching methods and the learning strategies of the students.The results of three terminal examinations of eight batches of students are taken and statistical analysis are made in order to obtain the rate of high ranking grades,pass percentage and average scores of every batch.The objective is achieved by comparing the results of the eight batches.The fourth chapter is about a survey on Elementary Chinese comprehensive courses in Dodoma University,Tanzania.This chapter is divided into three sections.The first one deals with the questionnaire survey of the teachers of the Elementary Chinese comprehensive course,which analyses the attitude of the teachers,their teaching strategies and the difficulties encountered during in-class teaching.The second one deals with the survey on the study environment of the students of the Elementary Chinese comprehensive course which analyses the general study environment of the students,their attitude towards learning Chinese and their learning strategies.The third section deals with the factors that affect the teaching of Elementary Chinese comprehensive course.Based on the two surveys,the factors that affect the in-class teaching and learning of Chinese are analysed,and they can be divided into internal and external factors.In the fifth chapter,based on the data analysed in the previous three chapters,some suggestions regarding the teaching of Elementary Chinese comprehensive course are proposed.It is divided into three parts: Creation of a good study environment,raising the bars of teaching standards and improving the efficiency of the students in language acquisition.The final part is the conclusion which summarizes the whole thesis.
