The Translation Teaching Method(TTM)is a method of explaining and practicing the language knowledge and skills of the target language by using the teaching method of translating and interpreting.It was neglected after the founding of the Direct Teaching Method.Nowadays as the encouragement of diversification method on second language teaching,people start to reconsider the importance of TTM.This thesis based on living cases and class observation of the Confucius Institute of Vienna University,try to figure out the answer of below questions:How's the TTM being used in the class and what is the effect of it?What's the difference between teacher and learner on the attitude of using the method?How should the teachers use the method in their overseas Chinese class?In the first chapter,we raised the significance and method of the research.The second chapter is the literature review part.We went through both domestic and foreign made researches about the TTM field.The third chapter is the process of the research,we rank the using frequency of TTM in each part.The fourth chapter discussed teachers and students' attitude toward the result through the interview.In the last part,based on statistics and interview results,this thesis puts forward four specific suggestions for overseas Chinese teachers on how to use TTM in elementary and intermediate classes on practicalThe result shows that teachers are more tend to use the TTM on the segment of"Directly explaining the meanings of new words","Detailed explanation of the text"and "Deduction the new word meanings by morpheme meanings".Among them,the"Directly explaining the meanings of new words" part is the most frequently used part of TTM.Moreover,the attitudes of teachers and students toward the TTM are generally similar.Yet they do have some divergence on the part of Gramma Practicing.
