The Application Of Task-based Approach In Elementary Chinese Reading Class

In language learning,listening,speaking,reading and writing are four basic skills.As a main input method,reading is an important method to get knowledge and information.So reading class is very important in Chinese teaching.Task-based language teaching had been introduced in 1980s.It emphasizes the language teaching mode of "learning by doing".This paper is based on the author’s teaching experience from the Startalk Summer Camp in 20]6 of Confucius Institute of University of Hawaii at Manoa,and combined elementary reading education with task-based language teaching,and hopes to provide some useful suggestions about elementary Chinese reading class.There are six sections in this paper.The first part of introduction is mainly about why the author selected this topic,the significances and research methods.The second part introduced the theory of task-based language teaching mode and the research result in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.The third part introduced the 2016 Startalk Summer Camp of University of Hawaii at Manoa.The forth part showed implementation process of the task-based teaching method in Startalk elementary reading class.The fifth part analysized the results and feedback by classroom observation and taking questionnaire survey and then summarized the advantages and difficulties during the implementation of task-based language teaching reading class and gave some corresponding solutions.The last part gave the conclusion.The author found out that combing task-based language teaching mode with Chinese reading class can active classroom atmosphere,raise students’ interests and teamwork spirit and improve students’ reading ability.However,teachers still pay attention to some other aspects,such as making task syllabus,selecting popular topics as reading materials,making strict classroom rules and observing and guiding students carefully.
