In recent years,the Higher Vocational Education has developed rapidly with the support of the national policy.But some problems are still remained to be solved.The key of the Higher Vocational Education is to train high-skilled talents,it focuses on practicing student's skills.Therefore,the public English teaching,as a part of the higher education,is deeply influenced by the traditional English teaching.The knowledgebased education can't improve the ability of using English.It's hard to meet the needs of the employers.This paper deeply investigates the English teaching of three vocational colleges in Changsha.According to the investigation,we find out the problem in our English teaching.Finally,we conclude the reasons of these problems,and put forward some suggestions to improve our English teaching.There are following four chapters in this paper.The first chapter is to introduce the background,meaning of this research.The related-researches both home and abroad are summarized in this chapter.And at the end of this chapter,the contents,methods and thoughts of the research are introduced.The design of the questionnaire lies in the first part of the second chapter.The questionnaire of the paper are from several aspects: the learning situation of the students,the teaching situation of the teachers and the demands of the employers.In the third chapter,we find the following problems that lie in our English teaching: the teaching aims,the teaching contents,the teaching concept,the teaching methods and teaching assessment.And also the reasons of the problems in our English teaching are analyzed.First,traditional teaching concept takes strong root while we are teaching.Second,it is also restricted by the teaching conditions.Third,the knowledge structure of the teachers can't meet the demands of development of the society.In the fourth chapter,we take the order-from class of Hydrological professional as an example to put forward some suggestions.The improved measures are based on developing vocational skills.First,the set up of the teaching aims are guided by CBE.Second,the select of the teaching contents are based on CBE.Third,the teaching models focus on improving students' skills.Fourth,the student-centered teaching method is introduced.Fifth,the scientific teaching assessment is set up for improving students' skills.
