This translation material is chosen from the third and fourth chapters of Ecological Ethics—An Introduction written by Patrick Curry. The third Chapter “Ethics” introduces the basic conceptions of ethics as well as the epistemological issues that impact upon it;the fourth Chapter “Three Schools of Ethics” introduces deontology, consequentialism and virtue ethics. This translation report is divided into four parts. The first part is a general description of the translation task, which includes the source of the translation material, its main contents and the significance of the selected material. The second part is a general introduction of the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, the choosing of translation methods, the problems encountered in the revision of the first draft as well as proofreading and polishing. The third part gives a thorough analysis on the typical translation cases, ranging from words, sentences to annotation translation.First, word translation analyses the determination and extension of word meanings, conversion of word classes and extension of words into sentences.Second, sentence translation includes the translation of embedded sentences, loose sentences, appositive clauses, attributive clauses, objective clauses, negative sentences and parenthesis.Third, for the translation of annotations, four methods are adopted. The last part of the report is a summary of the translation process, which gives a reflection on the deficiencies existing in the translation process and solutions to these problems. It is pointed out that a qualified translator must be rigorous in attitude, have solid language skills in both English and Chinese as well as comprehensive knowledge.
