A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Employee Handbook Of A Truck Company

With the fast development of economic globalization,more and more foreign companies set up their plants in China and hire a large number of employees from the local areas.Most foreign companies provide employee handbooks to help employees adapt themselves better to a multinational working environment.An employee handbook usually contains information about corporate policies,procedures,working conditions,and codes of conduct.Because not all Chinese employees can understand the English version of an employee handbook,a multinational company usually entrusts translators with the task of translating it into Chinese.The report is based on the E-C translation of the Employee Handbook of a truck company.Analysis of the source document shows that it is composed of vocative,expressive and informative texts and has a concise and precise language style.In the translation process,semantic translation and communicative translation strategies are applied to achieve succinct and readable effect.Semantic translation helps to achieve faithfulness and precision while communicative translation can improve readability and comprehension.The two strategies are also employed together in certain cases to make the translation both faithful and idiomatic.The report is composed of five chapters: Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the project,its significance and the translation process;Chapter Two mainly discusses the text typology theory of Peter Newmark;Chapter Three analyzes the contents,features,text types and functions of the source text;Chapter Four presents many examples to describe translation strategies applied to different types of texts,including semantic translation,communicative translation and the combination of the two approaches,as well as the corresponding effects;Chapter Five summarizes the major findings,limitations and suggestions to draw a conclusion.
