English Translation Report On Confocal Microscopy

With the increase of China's national strength and the global boom of science and technology,China has witnessed increasingly frequent academic exchanges with the rest of the world.Technological monograph,which offers the most systematical and comprehensive introduction of technological achievements,plays a significant role in academic exchanges.Currently,the translationn studies of technological monographs still focus on English-to-Chinese translation.As a branch of optics,Confocal microscopy has developed for only 30 years or so,but delivered fruitful results.However,the corrresponding English translation studies in this fied are too few to meet need of China's exchanges with the rest of the world.This translation task is about translating three chapters of Confocal Microscopy from Chinese to English.Guided by relevant translation theories,translator summarized the approaches and skills used in translation of words,sentences and unique linguistic phenomenon and studied some of the differences between the two languages,hoping to enrich translation studies on technological monographs.There are many difficulties during the translation process and they can be mainly divided into two parts.One is that there are a great number of professional terms,long and complex sentences,which are just the characteristics of technological text.The other is that there are some text describing mathematical calculus,which are not very common in other kinds of articles.Faced with these difficulties,the translator,guided by Reiss's text typology and Christiane Nord's theory of text analysis in translation,analyzed the text type,intratextual and extratextual factors and thus had a deeper understanding of the test.Then,on the basis of these analysis,the translator studies the translation on words,sentences,and text describing the mathematical calculus.In the case studies of words,the translator not only focused on the translation of nouns,but also the use of verbs and prepositions,hoping to deliver accurate and economic sentences.In the case studies of sentences,the translator discussed the translation skills and approaches,mainly including translation techniques of combination,addition and omission,and how to deal with the differences in logic and voice between the two languages.In the case studies of discourse,the translator discussed the use of pronoun as a cohesive device in scientific and technological text.What's more,the translation of sentences describing the mathematical calculus was studied and the problems that may occur when translating the coordinating conjunctions was discussed.This translation program facilitated the publication of Confocal Microscopy on Springer,enriched the bilingual materials on this field which offered reference of technological translators and guidance for relevant researchers trying to deliver English papers,and promoted the communication and development on this field.
