Translation, simply put,is an activity in which one language is used to accurately re-express the thoughts and content expressed in another language.Translation is a language activity as well as it is a means of communication by which two different languages are used to communicate ideas between two nations and promote the various fields of communication between people from all countries. There is no short-cut in translation. As a student who majors in translation,it is after repeated practice, constant summarizing and comprehension that I was better able to apply the knowledge of translation theory that I have learnt from the books in my translation practice which has helped to improve my level of translation. Some common translation methods derived from practice which includes the process of converting the language of a country to that of another country, using the appropriate translation method and skills, are helpful to readers more intuitively understanding the general idea of the translated text and the context of the original text. These methods also help to improve the quality of translation. The material chosen for translation was a whole periodical from the famous Japanese magazine Niponica. The translation for this report is about ten thousand words, and is of a popular descriptive writing style with an extremely wide readership. This report is divided into four main sections, taking the universal standards of translation circles(faithfulness, coherence and literary grace)as reference guide, and applying the translation methods learnt in class to the translation of the text. The first section mainly includes an introduction of the translated text Look Japan, the objective and significance of the research and a summary of the main idea of the original text that was translated. The second section describes the process of the task, mainly the analysis and thorough checking of the content of the text before translating. The third section is focused on the specific case analysis, mainly analyzing examples pertaining to vocabulary, sentences and translation methods, comparatively analyzing the application of different translation methods and skills. The fourth section gives a summary of the overall experience gained from the translation practice and the impression it has left on the translator.
