Report On The Translation Of Long Sentences In The Third IMO GHG Study 2014

With the rapid development of international maritime industry,the translation of maritime documents has become increasingly important.The translation of maritime documents in English belongs to a specialized kind of translation,and it requires appropriateness and accuracy in word choice and faithfulness to the original text.In addition,appropriate translation methods and skills should be adopted to help target language readers fully understand the content.This report is on the translation of long sentences in "the Third IMO GHG Study 2014".In the report,the author defines the sentences with no less than thirty words as long sentences,and such sentences come to one hundred and thirteen.In the process of translation,the three translation methods are applied in the translation of long sentences based on Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory——amplification,inversion and division.The essence of functional equivalence theory is to help target language readers to achieve the real intention of the translated text just as the source language readers do.This report emphatically analyzes three above-mentioned translation methods in the translation of long sentences with different structures,so that the translation of maritime documents,to a large extent,is close to the source language text in meaning and language style,and target language readers can have a better understanding of the intension of the source language text.Finally,the author summarizes the translation methods and skills mentioned in the concluding part and hope to provide reference to the translation of maritime documents in future.
