Education is a fundamental task for the coming generation. With the development of society, society and the family pay more attention to family education. It is easier to promote children's all-round development by means of scientific family education. This report chooses The Awakened Family, written by Indian writer Shefali Tsabary, as translation text. The writing angle of this text is unique. Parents see children as mirrors, and they reflect their own behaviors through children's behaviors and performances, thereby awakening. The family educational book can effectively guide the problem of children's healthy growth, so its readers are parents and educational workers. Different from the books with professional guidance, this book mainly illustrates how to educate children scientifically through giving some real life examples. Therefore, the translator should fully understand the feature of language and style during translation so that the information can be passed on to Chinese readers better. All kinds of texts are divided into three types by British translation theorist Newmark: informative type (non-literary works, textbooks and academic papers), expressive type (literary works, autobiographies and essays) and vocative type (introductions, advertisements and brochures). According to the feature of this book, Family educational books belong to informative type and vocative type. So under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory, it is suitable to use literal translation and free translation to translate modal verbs. This report is mainly divided into three parts. The first part is introduction which introduces the task of this translation, overseas and domestic research status on family education and realistic meaning for choosing this book. The second part is the body which is divided into three chapters.Chapter One mainly introduces the background of the author, work, translation practice, language feature of text and communicative translation theory.Chapter Two describes the whole translation process which includes preparation for tool and background knowledge before translation, the process of translation and quality control.Chapter Three is the key part which illustrates how to translate modal verbs with literal and free translation under the guidance of communicative translation theory through analyzing examples in the original book. The last part is conclusion which mainly summarizes the whole translation process, some attentive problems in the process of translation and the enlightenment of the future work and study.
