Doing Life: A Biography of Elizabeth Jolleywhich is written by Brian Dibble is selected as this translation material.A biography reflects a biographee's lives and experiencesat the same time it reflects social conditions and people's lives,which has a significance of historical research and reference.In this practice,the translator has made an E-C translation of Chapter Four and Chapter Five of this biography,which mainly tells about Elizabeth Jolley's nurse experience in Birmingham,her falling in love with Leonard,her life of becoming an unmarried mother and her experience in Pinewood.The text is translated under the guidance of “Functional Equivalence” to achieve the equivalence between the two languages,maximize the loyalty of source text and meet the characteristics of target language.A detailed description of this translation practice can be seen in this report,including task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.The translation methods,conversion,Chinese four-character expressions and addition of necessary connectives,are explained through concrete examples.The translator rationally and appropriately uses the above methods to maximize showing Elizabeth Jolley's life to target readers.
