Since the book Cohesion in English which published by Halliday and Hasan in 1976,the theory of cohesion has attracted a large number of scalars' concern in modern linguistics.Cohesion in English has also marked the establishment of the theory of cohesion.Halliday and Hasan concern that the texture features are represented by the theory of cohesion,which make the connection between each part in a texture possible.And the theory is divided into five parts;they are reference,substitution,ellipsis,connection,and lexical cohesion.And then each of cohesions has been interpreted in detail.The study of cohesion has established a solid basis of the theory of cohesion.This paper mainly studies the research on reference cohesion in cloze test of English entrance examination to senior high school.This paper firstly introduced the relevant research which studied at home and abroad since the latest half century.Generally speaking,foreign scholars mainly study the theory of reference cohesion and cohesive devices while domestic scholars mainly devote themselves into the study of the extension of reference cohesive device and meaning.Otherwise,domestic scholars also combine the cohesive theory and foreign teaching theory,which enrich the application of those theories.Most of the experiments have proved that the cohesive theory has played a positive role in reading comprehension.In the process of studying,the author also found that as the development and perfection of cohesive theory,most of the published reports and academic papers are written about reading comprehension and English writing,but studying about cloze test in using cohesive theory is less and studying about cloze test of entrance examination to senior high school is even few.Due to most study papers are based on CET-4,CET-6,the entrance examination for college,and the entrance exams for postgraduate school,this paper fills the blanks of the study about application of reference cohesive devices on cloze test of entrance examination to senior high school.Cloze test is the classic and proficiency type of studying students' English,and in recent years,cloze test is also as the compulsory test type of English entrance examination to senior high school.For middle school students,cloze test has become a part where students lose the most points.The main reason is that students do not have an overall understanding of discourse cohesion.Due to this fact,there are three questions discussed in this thesis: 1.Which type of reference cohesion is widely used in cloze test of English entrance exam? 2.Can it help the students to get higher marks in cloze test by using this type of reference cohesion? 3.If it is useful,can students use reference cohesion into practice?The author has studied and analyzed 28 authentic papers of cloze test of senior high school entrance examination,and found that the theory of reference cohesion plays an important role in discourse analysis,which plays an important role in the construction of discourse.And reference cohesion is also easy to be used by middle school students.There are three types of reference cohesion theory;they are personal reference,demonstrative reference and comparative reference.They are all suitable for cloze test in entrance examination to senior high school,and personal reference is the most widely used type.At the same time,the author takes 30 senior middle school students of grade nine as the research object,and adopts the method of contrast experiment teaching to prove that the study of the reference cohesion theory is helpful to deal with cloze test.This paper is mainly divided into five parts;introduction,literature review,theoretical framework,and the conclusion of the research on reference cohesion on cloze test of senior high school entrance examination.
