Explicitation was initially developed by Vinay and Darbelnet, and it refers to the translation process in which embedded information in the original text is expressed explicitly in the target text. This conception was continuously expanded by afterwards academic and case studies conducted by a number of scholars, and it has been widely used in the translation of various types of texts.Reports are non-literary texts with the main objective of conveying information.Non-literary translation should be conducted in line with the rule of accuracy, objectivity and plainness. As terminologies, long and complex sentences are quite common in reports, the corresponding target texts may be obscure in language or not influent in statement.Explicitation,as a strategy used to reveal embedded information and to strengthen coherence of target text, can be used as a tool to improve non-literary translation. With 2016 Economic Report of the President as an example, the author conducted a case study to analyze how to achieve explicitation in the translation of reports.By comparing the original and the target texts, the author concluded explicitation strategies in terms of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, including annotation and abstract-concrete transition in the dimension of semantics;reference, substitution and ellipsis in the dimension of grammatical strategies;as well as coherence in the dimension of discourses.Explicitation helps readers of target texts understand and accept the texts.Nevertheless, the strategies of explicitation cannot be exempt from the effect of subjectivity, and the over-usage of explicitation may undermine the original objectivity. Therefore, the degree of explicitation should be controlled in an appropriate range. In addition, the author only develops ideas on the basis of a single text, while further studies need to be conducted to explore whether explicitation can be used universally in non-literary translation.
