This translation report makes a tentative study on the translation competence of legal translators based on the author's own experience of translating the scholarly legal work-European Labour Law from a new angle on the application of Model of Translation Competence advanced by Deborah Cao,who is a professor at Griffith University,Australia. The methods adopted in this report are mainly literature-analytic method,case-study method, data charts and comparative analysis. After analyzing the application of translation competence on the basis of translation practice and demonstrating plenty of examples, the author has finally come to the conclusion that the D.Cao's model of translation competence has important guiding significance to translation, which may apply to translation practicably and efficiently. The translation competence of legal translators requires that we consider both abstract knowledge systems of linguistics and real-world knowledge and the crucial practical skills of reading and writing, including language competence, knowledge structures and translational strategic competence. These three variables interact with each other within the translation process, and therefore translators need to activate linguistic knowledge,non-linguistic knowledge and various strategies in order to comprehend the message in SL and reproduce the terms and sentences in TL.Translation competence can be acquired. That's to say,it can be accumulated through education, training and experience.Therefore,D.Cao model provides the guideline for the individuals who aspire to be legal translators through acquiring translational language competence, knowledge structures and translational strategic competence by professional training and translation practice.
