As a world renowned and outstanding magazine,The Economist is highly influential with its sharp views,in-depth analyses and unique perspectives. Thus translating the magazine is not only beneficial to accumulating translating experiences and enhancing capability, but also has significance for enabling the Chinese readers to gain an international perspective and to review ourselves objectively. This report starts with analyzing The Economist's writing features. The Economist seldom interprets the large number of technical vocabularies in the news since its target audience is welleducated professionals;the magazine often uses complex sentences to convey as much information as possible in limited space;besides it presents a humorous but prudent style. This report ponders on obstacles these features have posed for Chinese readers,as well as the translating challenges.Nida's “functional equivalence” theory believes that the translated version should generate an equivalent effect among the readers as the original article;content is more important than form, but form should also be given due consideration in translation. Then, this report comes up with practical suggestions for each of these difficulties with the help of the theory, and illustrates the solutions with cases.By studying the translation of The Economist, news translation experience is gained, and thoughts on news translation strategies improved.Besides,by learning more about the translation theory, and using it as a practical instrument to guide translation, the important role of theories is given a second thought to,as well as the understanding of translation itself.
