A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of That-clause In Financial News

This report analyzes the English-Chinese translation of that-clause in financial news,guided by the skopos theory.The author selects related materials from Chicago Tribune,Washington Post,and Los Angeles Times as the source texts to translate.During the process of translation,the author finds that in the source text that-clause appears with a high frequency and with different functions,such as object clauses,attributive clauses,appositive clauses and adverbial clauses.In the translation practice,the author often uses some translation skills,such as Syntactic Linearity,Combination,Fronting,Division and Restructuring.The skopos theory states that the purpose is.to determine the use of translation techniques,and the translation should realize similar expressive effect in the environment of target language.Through translation practice,the author argues that syntactic linearity skill is often used to translate object clauses,indirect quotations and adverbial clauses of cause;Combination is more frequently used for the translation of attributive clauses and special usage;Fronting could be used to translate attributive clauses and adverbial clauses of purpose.Restructuring is often employed to translate attributive clauses,indirect quotations and adverbial clauses of purpose.Division is often employed to translate appositive clauses,attributive clauses and object clauses.The author hopes this report will benefit financial news translation.
