Project management in gas and oil industry helps to save time,reduce cost and improve quality,thereby improving economic efficiency of oil and gas project.Although project management in gas and oil industry has developed quite well in foreign countries,in China it is still at the stage of exploration and study,especially books are few concerning the oil and gas project management.In order to achieve the economic benefits of oil and gas,it is necessary for China's oil and gas engineering to update the relevant knowledge of project management.Therefore,the English-Chinese translation of overseas materials about oil and gas project management will enable more Chinese readers to keep up with the latest trend in oil and gas project management as well as learn and acquire advanced knowledge in the field of oil and gas project management,which is of practical value.The source text of the translation project is excerpted from Project Management in Gas and Oil Industry,published in 2016 and written by Mohamed A.El-Reedy,who has provided consulting to different engineering companies and oil and gas industries in Egypt and to international companies as well as published many related books and papers.The present translation report is composed of four chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction of the background knowledge,theoretical guidance,purpose and significance of the translation project.The second chapter introduces the content and characteristics of the source text.The source text is mainly about the new methods of oil and gas project management,and its language feature is strong logic,which is a typical information text.The third chapter focuses on the translation process,including the preparation before translation,the difficulties encountered in translation and the modifications made after translation.The fourth chapter focuses on the description of translation skills adopted and the difficulties tackled during the process of translation.The difficult points include the accurate comprehension of technical terms and concepts in gas and oil project management,and how to convey the information of the source text faithfully and accurately as well as how to deal with sentences in passive voices.To solve these difficulties,based on a careful study and analysis of the source text,and under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator adopts the methods of amplification,omission,conversion,division and other translation skills in order to reproduce the original information of the source text and satisfy the reading habit of Chinese readers.The fifth chapter summarizes the experience acquired in the process of translation and problems to be solved in the future.It is through completing the translation project that the translator has a better understanding of the development and related knowledge of project management in gas and oil industry at home and abroad,thus broadening her knowledge.Meanwhile,the translation practice is a great opportunity for the translator to put what she has learned into practice.The translator has generally mastered the way to translate gas and oil project management text,which provides experiences and assistance for future translation work.
