A Chinese Translation Of Part 2 Of The Jury Information On The Website Of The Massachusetts Judicial Branch And A Report On The Translation

The jury system is an important part of the American judicial system.The jury information page on the Official Website of the Massachusetts Judicial Branch gives a systematic introduction of the history,the mechanism,etc.of the Massachusetts jury system.A translation of the website can provide a reference for China's judicial reform.This thesis is a translating and analyzing program in which,under the guidance of Professor Hu Zhaoyun,Grand Jurors&Federal Jurors of the website are translated and the background of the project,adoption of new term translations as well as an analysis of the translating techniques are elaborated on.In order to express the English text in Chinese accurately,this thesis adopts such translations as“???”?“???”and“??”initiated by Professor Hu Zhaoyun for "jury"?"juror" and"summons" After the translation,some translation difficulties are analyzed and both lexical and syntactic techniques employed in the translation are discussed with ample examples.The lexical techniques include the flexibility of word translation in specific contexts,while the syntactic techniques include ellipsis and techniques used in translating the passive voices,typical legal English sentences and long sentences.Techniques used in translating the passive include translation of the English passive into the Chinese passive,conversion of the English passive into the Chinese active and conversion of the English passive into Chinese sentences without subjects.Techniques used in translating long sentences include linear translation and division.This thesis concludes that difficulties in translating the website lies in its professionalism,thus the author is required to read works about the jury system to lay a solid foundation for the translation task.Meanwhile,bilingual competence is required to be enhanced in rendering idiomatic translation.
