Hu Shih lived in the decade when China transformed traditional type into modern type.Facing the impact of Chinese ideology and western ideology,different people provided different ways to define China.Whether it is cultural conservatism which is advocate Chinese traditional ideology as the main part or westernization which is regard western ideology as the core,both take into account the Chinese and Western cultures.Hu Shih is considered to be the representative of westernization,but he didn't abandon the Chinese ideology totally.He tried his best to illustrate the relationship between Chinese ideology and western ideology.Liberalism is the core of Hu Shih's thought and is also the most representative of his ideological characteristics.Even in the most typical Western characteristics of the liberalism,his efforts are also reflected the characteristics of Chinese and Western mutual everywhere.This article will be based on Hu Shih's liberalism,arguing his existence of the thought characteristics between China and West.The first chapter mainly expounds the characteristics of the interplay of the background of Hu Shih's thought,and the characteristics of the interaction between Hu Shih's personal experience and the formation of liberalism.Then,this article mainly analyzes Hu Shih's liberalism into three elements: freedom,democratic,and experimentalism.In the second chapter,it mainly expounds the basic connotation of Hu Shih's view of freedom and the characteristics which is the interaction between China and the West.Hu used the Western freedom idea to reconstruct the free thought in Chinese tradition and expressed Chinese traditional significant influence in “tolerance is more important than freedom.” The third chapter mainly elaborates the basic content of Hu Shih's democratic View and the characteristics of Chinese and Western mutual photography.Hu Shih explored the modern democratic ideology in the Confucian thought.At the same time,Taoist thought also affected his understanding of Western democracy.The fourth chapter mainly elaborates the basic content of experimentalism and the characteristics of Chinese and Western interaction,Hu Shih's experimentalelements of Chinese elements,at the same time,with experimentalism to re-understand the textual studies.The three basic aspects of his liberalism clearly reflect the characteristics of the interaction between China and the West.Perhaps it is not the intention of Chinese traditional thought or Western cultural thought,but it may be better to understand the importance of Chinese and Western cooperation for the reconstruction of Chinese culture in the new era if we look at the “wholehearted modernization” vision proposed by Hu Shih.
