Researchers from China tend to pay more attention to political and legal text translation among some formal texts.Although the texts about school regulations and rules are also very important, there remain a few researches that focus on their translation methods. The student handbook plays an important role in providing guidance for universities and schools to perform ideological education and behavior management for students.Such handbook falls into the category of regulation texts, which possess the prominent feature of language accuracy. It is not easy to achieve the equivalence of meaning and style between the source language and the target language in the student handbook translation. As a report on Chinese to English translation of A Handbook for Full-time Postgraduates of Ludong University, this thesis analyzes some specific problems in the process of translation and explores the corresponding solutions.Guided by theories of contrastive analysis between Chinese and English, the report describes the translation process and attempts to find proper strategies which can be applied to regulative text translation. It is found that three translation strategies are helpful in regulative text translation. The first strategy is the transference of the lexical patterns, which include the use of the abstract nouns that stand for state, quality, emotion and the omission of the categorical words that refer to behaviors, phenomena, properties, and other words of conceptual category. The transfer of dynamic Chinese to static English means that English tends to use nouns,so its narrative is static, while Chinese tends to use verbs,so its narrative is dynamic. The second strategy is the transference of the syntactical patterns, such as the use of passive voice which emphasizes the voice of the speaker or writer. The use of “attitude first, narrative later” describes the different expressions of Chinese and English. The third strategy is the transference of discourse patterns, such as the use of topic sentence which can help students have a clear understanding of the main idea and the transference of the spiral structure to linear structure. With the help of these translation strategies, translators will have a better command of language and basic research abilities.Meanwhile, they will have a solid language foundation and become more skilled in their translating ability for regulative texts. It is hoped that this report will enrich translation methods for regulative texts, perfect translation theoretical researches on relevant text types, and offer some practical guidance for translators.
