This report is a summary of and reflection on translating Employee Handbook of Shanghai CSCEC Dongfu Investment & Development Co.,Ltd.Considering the features of the source text, the requirements of the client and expectations of the target audience, the author chose Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as guide to help to complete this translation task, which emphasizes the transmission of information and readers' response. There are four chapters in this report.Chapter one is Task Description, including introduction to the task and target readers, and the client's requirements.Chapter two introduces the translation process,i.e.preparing,translating and proofreading.Chapter three, the main body of the report, deals with the theoretical framework and case analysis.Taking differences between Chinese and English into account, the author illustrates different translation strategies on levels of lexis, syntax and text.On lexical level, the author adopted the strategies of amplification, omission and conversion. On syntactical level, literal translation and free translation were applied to handle long and complicated sentences. On textual level, cohesion and coherence were preferred to reproduce the logic of the source text. The last chapter is Conclusion in which the author summarizes her major achievements and limitations as well in terms of completing the translation practice.Through analyzing some typical cases, the translator came to the conclusion that the Functional Equivalence Theory is applicable to translating such practical texts as the above Handbook.Obstacles and inefficiencies in the practice are unavoidable, experience and improvement in the translator, however, are highly appreciated and lessons for future similar projects are very much valued.
