This translation report is based on the translation practice of the academic work,AResearch on Japan's Indiscriminate Bombing of Chongqing during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, written by Pan Xun.As an academic work, the book is full of formal expressions. The research on the book could enrich people's knowledge about Japanese aggression against China during the Second World War.Since 1980 s,the research on Chongqing bombing has become an important topic in theChinese academic community, this paper is going to study the translation of this topic. The author is responsible for the translation of Chapter Four of this book. The author of this book mainly introduces the casualties and property damages of Chongqing suffered from Japanese air bombing. All the statistic data are based on historical archives collected by various departments. The translator has to pay more attention to their translationin order to transmit the statistic data in a correct, precise, formal and professional way. However, the difference of measurement unit between China and the English-speaking countries makes it difficult to translateall the data.It is only when the translator finds a close natural equivalence in English that the translation is able to make sense among the target readers.Eugene A.Nida stresses on the transmission of information and the target reader's response. He thinks that “adjustment could be made so as to produce a satisfactory functional equivalent in both language and culture”(Nida,1993).Therefore,the author tries to discuss the difference in translating statistic data from Chineseto English guided by Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.
