University of Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa University,Sri Lanka teach Chinese to undergraduates.In this research the author points out the existing problems in Chinese Spoken teaching process at Kelaniya University and Sabaragamuwa University.Through an investigation and classroom observations it was found that lack of teachers,teaching materials and insufficient usage of multimedia as the main problems.In case of practical teaching,author has taught Chinese language at Department of Chinese,University of Kelaniya from September 2016 to January 2017 and Department of Chinese,Sabaragamuwa University from January to February 2017.During the stage of practical Chinese teaching to the undergraduates in Chinese speaking class,it was understood several issues such as;students in the elementary level and intermediate level,were not competent enough to communicate what they actually mean,they do not have enough vocabulary,they do not have a clear image about Chinese culture and current situation of Chinese society.Due to these reasons Chinese speaking ability of students' has not reached to the expected performance level.With 6 years of Chinese language learning experience of the author from undergraduate to masters' Degree,applied communicative approach teaching method to intermediate Chinese speaking class at Kelaniya University and elementary spoken Chinese class at Sabaragamuwa University,through a specific lesson with practical teaching process emphasizing the importance of communicative approach method,which finally ends up with significant improvement of students' Chinese speaking skill.Sri Lankan Chinese speaking classes should be student centered.Use of communicative method in Chinese speaking classroom helps to stimulate and motivate the students' interest in learning Chinese.In order to improve students ' communicative skills,they must be trained to understand about the cross cultural communication.
