A Report On The Translation Of American EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program

With the further development of Sino-America economic relation,more and more Chinese citizens choose to emigrate to America.One of the ways to emigrate is to apply for America EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program.The application documents required in this program are of various types.And the translation quality directly influences the acceptance of application for America EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program.The report is the translation project for America EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program.The client entrusted the company to translate the application documents for emigration from October 22,2016 to October 30,2016.The documents include personal information of the petitioner and lawful documentary evidence of investment funds.The project manager of the company organized the translation project for the America EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program and assigned the author the translation of the personal resume,foreign exchange statements and real-estate evaluation report.In the translation process,the author encountered many problems and challenges.To deal with these difficulties,translation strategies and techniques are applied under the guidance of Skopos theory and Reiss' text typology.According to the client's requirements,the translation purpose is to meet the requirements of the USCIS officers.Since original texts are informative texts,the translation focuses on the transfer of content and information.In order to achieve the anticipated functions of the translated version,the collection of the terminology and relevant parallel texts were conducted.In the translation process,translation difficulties at both lexical and syntactic levels were solved by different translation techniques to fulfill the translation functions.At lexical level,translation difficulties include the translation of terminology,four-character phrases,company names and addresses.To deal with the translation of terminology,addition and the semantic analysis of the words were applied,and the parallel texts had also been used to verify appropriateness of the translation choices.In terms of the translation of four-character phrases,literal translation with further explanation,liberal translation with expressing deep-structured meaning or adding background information were used to transfer the information of the original texts.As for the translation of company names and addresses,literal translation,liberal translation and transliteration were used to deal with the translation of the company names;while the literal translation and transliteration were applied to deal with the translation of addresses.At syntactic level,the translation of complex sentences and zero-subject sentences were selected as the main translation problems.In the translation of complex sentences,linear translation,attributive postposition,division,omission and order changing translation were used to handle the translation difficulties;to the zero-subject sentences,adding subject and the use of passive voice were applied.Although the client is satisfied with the translation,four problems in the translation process are revealed,including the lack of computer-aided translation software,the lack of communication among translators,the lack of unified language style due to different styles of different translators,and carelessness in the translation of numbers.And the corresponding solutions are as follows.Firstly,the translation group can employ the computer-aided translation software;secondly,the translators in the translation group need to communicate with each other;thirdly,the language style should be unified;last but not the least,the translators should have patience in translating the figures.This report indicates that in the translation process,a good translator need to be proficient in both the original and target languages involved;a good translator needs to have command of professional knowledge in concerning fields including the related terminology;a serious and careful working attitude is demanded in the process;the spirit of teamwork for all translators is also very important.The report is expected to contribute to the other related translators.
