On Escort Interpreting From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory-a Practice Report On Interpreting Of Xi'an Scenic Spots

In recent years,tourism,as an important part of tertiary industry,has been experiencing a rapid expansion both in China and the rest of the world.Having the curiosity about Chinese profound culture and its long history,more and more foreign visitors come to China with their.Here in the inbound tourism,escort interpreter plays a vital role in facilitating tourist-guide interaction.As a result,the rising amount of the entry tourists calls for larger amount of qualified escort interpreters as the communicative intermediary for their better visit in China.Therefore,the escort interpreting for the scenic spots deserves an immediate and in-depth research.This importance starts to attract attention from many outstanding scholars and researches into the field of escort interpreting from different perspectives,which greatly contribute to the formation of the theory basis of the practice report.This report conducts a research on the escort interpreting for Xi'an scenic spots visiting under the perspective of German Skopos Theory.To study and solve the problems existed in practice activities;the author has collected many first-hand scenic spots introduction of Xi'an,which makes the report more practical and valuable.And the report is mainly conducted to deal with the following questions:1.What are the different purposes of the tour guide,interpreter and tourists in various scenes during visiting?2.When coming across the untranslatable words or expressions,how can an interpreter make suitable selection under the Skopos Theory successfully in the process of scenic spot escort interpreting?This practice report is mainly a report of escort interpreter in the city of Xi'an,which is a practice experience of the author.The task stated in this thesis was received in July of 2016 in Xi'an by the author who took up the position as the escort interpreter,of which the clients are a group of Americans come to visit China.The escort interpreting process of several famous scenic spots in Xi'an is chosen as the report content of this report which describes interpreting practice,ways of dealing with the problems as well as the post-interpreting reflection of the author.The practice report attaches importance to the arrangements of pre-interpreting preparations,onsite escort interpreting process and the post-interpreting reflection.Firstly,it demonstrates the pre-interpreting preparations through information collection.Secondly,the report presented several actual problems encountered during the process of the practice through the elaboration of the whole interpreting content.The problems are mainly untranslatable proper nouns,long-term memory problem of the interpreter,high information density,cultural differences and unforeseen circumstances.At last,this report concludes a few countermeasures and interpreting skills namely omitting,adding follow-up explanation,generalizing,paraphrasing,transliterating and asking.After finishing the practice,the author concluded answers to the above mentioned questions.Firstly,purposes here in the practice are mainly to maintain fluent conversations,to facilitate deals between the visitors and peddlers,to better cooperate with the tour guide,etc.Secondly,when encountering untranslatable words or the major barriers in the interpreting process,such as historical and cultural barrier,the religious barrier,the slang barrier and the accent barrier,the interpreter should take the information background into consideration and select the best strategy accordingly,and the strategies used mostly are asking,follow-up explanation and transliterating,etc.The author hopes that through the elaboration and generalization of this practice experience,this report can show interpreters a new view for selecting translation strategy.At the same time it will be able to provide assistance and references to other escort interpreters who engage in the tasks of inbound tourism.Meanwhile,the author hopes the findings in this report will give hint to other interpreters to do better researches,which ultimately in a way promotes the development of the research in this field.
