Advancing knowledge in a specific field, academic works tend to use complex sentences to ensure precision of expression.During the translation of complex sentences in academic works, translators need to pay attention to the knowledge itself explained in the text,as well as the meaning and coherence of sentences. This thesis explores translation of complex sentences in academic works, aims to figure out specific features of and solutions to translating complex sentences.Enlarging Translation,Empowering Translators is the source text of the translation task.Redefining translation and analyzing the role of translators, the book is worth reading and studying for translation learners. The translation methods of complex sentences in the book are worth analyzing.Chapter 2 of the book on defining translation is carefully translated and analyzed.Difficulties in translating complex sentences in the source text are caused mainly by different position of modifiers and sentence logic,of which the fundamental reason is the difference between English and Chinese in approaches to coherence. This thesis adopts three translation methods on the basis of comparing different approaches between English and Chinese to coherence, researching and analyzing translation methods and skills put forward by scholars to ensure coherence, namely embedding, reversing and cutting. To deal with complex sentences in academic works, translators should understand the knowledge provided in the source text, adopt different methods for comparison and analysis, and follow the principle of being coherent.Through this report, the translator can better understand translation methods of complex sentences in English academic works, and improve the quality of translation in terms of coherence.
