It is always hard to translate long sentences which possess various and complicated elements. In the English language of hypotaxis, important information is usually set at the beginning of a long sentence, while the Chinese language of parataxis often places the key parts at the end of a long sentence. This difference leads to difficulty in translating long sentences from English to Chinese.Bina Agarwal is an Indian scholar, whose most famous social science book A Field of OneOwn:Gender and Land Rights in South Asia describes the relationship between South Asian women and land rights by using numerous long sentences, which causes difficulty in comprehension and translation. However, the translation of long sentences from English to Chinese is not a problem with the use of appropriate methods, namely, finding sentence trunk and sorting out logical relationship and semantic links between other sentence elements,on the basis of which one should also adjust sentence length and word order to make the translation logical and to achieve a natural representation in the Chinese language. When I translated the first chapter of A Field of One's Own:Gender and Land Rights in South Asia,I adopted some translation techniques such as embedding,cutting,reversing,splitting-off and recasting by Liu Miqing to make an accurate and fluent translation. The translation of long sentences is a hard thinking process that requires great patience.I would detail the application of these five strategies in the translation of part of this book, sum up experience and find problems, hoping that all this would be helpful in future study and research.
