The author carried on an investigation about the students' positive mental characters in the first-grade and second-grade in a junior high school in Weifang.According to the result of the students' positive mental characters and the theory on positive psychology,design a group counseling program aimed to improve the students' positive mental characters.After carrying out the group counseling program,the paper adopted quantitative and qualitative analysis to study and assess the effect of it to find an effective way to improve the junior high school students' positive mental characters.To measure the development of the students' positive mental characters,the author used the Chinese Students' Positive Mental Characters Scale to do a survey for the 891 students in the first-grade and second-grade.According to the theory on positive psychology,the study designed a group counseling program and recruited the students in the first-grade who volunteered to join the group.The study chose 24 students to be the research subjects and divided them into control group and experimental group,male and female ratio was 1:1.The control group didn't receive any intervention,the experimental group joined in the group counseling activities for 8 times.Before the counseling,there is a pre-test to identify the students are homogeneous research subjects.The differences in pre-test and post-test of the experimental group were significantly greater than that of the control group,which indicated the positive group counseling did an effect on improving the subjects' positive mental characters.The tracking test scores on the experimental group members conducted three months later proved to be no significantly differences from the post-test scores.The study also made a qualitative analysis according to the member's self-assessment,the leader's assessment of the group members and activities.The results of the study follow:1.The junior high school students' positive mental characters all develops well,but the scores are relatively lower in leadership,creativity and ideation and observation.2.There is a significant difference on their positive mental characters in gender:girls' scores of creativity,persistence is lower than boys',but it's higher than boys' scores in spirit touching.3.In the six dimensions of positive mental characters,the first-grade students'scores of temperance and transcending are lower than that of the second-grade students',and there's no significant difference in other dimensions.4.The only children's scores of wisdom and knowledge are lower than non-only children's.5.Whether boarding or not doesn't make a difference in students' positive mental characters.6.The two-month and eight-time positive group counseling program aimed at second-grade junior high school students has effectiveness and feasibility.
